The Legend of Kōbō-Sui
Kōbō Daishi, also known as Kūkai
was a Buddhist monk who founded
the esoteric Shingon school of Buddhism.
Kūkai’s prominence in Japanese Buddhism has spawned numerous stories and legends about him.
The following is The Legend of “Kōbō-Sui”:
Long ago, Kōbō Daishi made a pilgrimage
all over the country.
In one village, a thirsty Kūkai met an elderly woman and asked her for some water. There was no water nearby so the elderly woman went out of her way to pump water from afar and graciously offered the water to him.
Kōbō Daishi, deeply moved by the elderly
woman’s kindness, sympathized that there was
no source of water near this village.
To express his gratitude for receiving some water
to drink, Kōbō Daishi struck the ground
with his Shakujō (a Buddist monk’s staff)
and Tokko (a Buddist ritual tool), and fresh water
sprouted from the ground.
This is the Legend of Kōbō-Sui.
There are also other variations of this legend.
